Intensive Integrated English Course

The course is designed to provide students with receptive (Listening and Reading) and productive (Speaking and Writing) skills at using English in communication. The emphasis is on the correct use of basic English structure, vocabulary, pronunciation, stress and intonation patterns in oral communication as well as written communication through intensive classroom practice, such as dialogues and role playing, as well as pair, group, and class activities. In addition, laboratory assignments and individual tutorials may be given on the basis of individual student needs. This is a theme-based course.

Mata  kuliah  Basic English Grammar bertujuan  membekali  mahasiswa  dengan  kompetensi  bahasa  Inggris  dasar, khususnya    tatabahasa    bahasa    Inggris,    yang    menjadi    landasan    untuk    mengembangkan keterampilan  berbahasa  (menyimak,  berbicara,  membaca,  dan  menulis).  Dalam tahap Basic, mahasiswa akan kembali diberikan pengenalan Tata Bahasa Inggris dengan pemahaman dasar tentang cara kerja tata bahasa Inggris. Mahasiswa akan mendapatkan pemahaman ini melalui studi dan analisis struktur kalimat bahasa Inggris. Pengetahuan eksplisit tentang aturan penggunaan bahasa ini akan memungkinkan mahasiswa untuk menganalisis dan meningkatkan tulisan Anda sendiri dalam bahasa Inggris. Tata bahasa Inggris penting dalam komunikasi, baik secara lisan maupun tertulis. Yang terpenting bagi mahasiswa merupakan bekal yang esensial untuk persiapan pengembangan karier. Memahami cara yang tepat untuk berkomunikasi dalam berbagai bidang membantu meningkatkan kepercayaan diri, tingkat keterampilan, dan kepribadian. Bahan  pembelajaran meliputi  pengetahuan  tentang  jenis  kata  dan  penyusunan  frasa,  klausa,  dan  kalimat  bahasa Inggris  dan  penerapannya  dalam  pengungkapan  makna  dalam  bahasa  Inggris.  Bahan  disajikan lewat  ceramah,  diskusi,  penugasan  di  dalam  kelas,  dan  penugasan  di  luar  kelas.  Penilaian dilakukan secara berkelanjutan berdasarkan partisipasi di kelas, tugas individual, kuis, dan ujian akhir semester.

Mata Kuliah Intensive Integrated English Course ini akan membantu mahasiswa mengembangkan keterampilan bahasa dasar dalam menyimak, berbicara, membaca, dan menulis dalam bahasa Inggris. Mahasiswa akan mempelajari keterampilan dasar yang mereka perlukan untuk mengkomunikasikan kebutuhan dasar dalam bahasa Inggris. Mereka akan memiliki banyak kesempatan untuk berlatih di kelas secara virtual dan akan mempelajari keterampilan yang mereka perlukan untuk berkomunikasi. Mata kuliah ini akan membantu mahasiswa tingkat awal menjadi lebih percaya diri sehingga mereka dapat menggunakan apa yang mereka pelajari di kelas untuk mengkomunikasikan kebutuhan dasar dan familiar dalam bahasa Inggris.

Setelah berhasil menyelesaikan kursus ini, mahasiswa diharapkan mampu untuk:

1.       Mengajukan dan menanggapi pertanyaan sederhana, rutin, dan dapat diprediksi tentang informasi pribadi.

2.       Komunikasikan beberapa kebutuhan dasar dalam percakapan informal.

3.       Memahami kata kunci, beberapa frase, perintah atau petunjuk sederhana dan kalimat pendek dalam percakapan sederhana tentang topik pribadi.

4.       Membaca teks sederhana yang berhubungan dengan kehidupan dan pengalaman sehari-hari: kejadian rutin, deskripsi orang, tempat dan benda, instruksi sederhana, dll.

5.       Menulis beberapa kalimat dan ungkapan tentang topik yang akrab bagi siswa: keluarga, perjalanan, makanan, kesehatan, dll.

6.       Menguasai struktur tata bahasa dasar untuk mengkomunikasikan kebutuhan dasar.

The course is designed to enable students to obtain the detail of spoken English discourses and to acquire the overall meaning of spoken English at intermediate level: comprehension of main ideas and details: literal and interpretive comprehension of dialogues, narrative, descriptive, and expository types of text in the most efficient way in order to understand connected discourses spoken natively at normal speed in ordinary communicative situation.  Class activities include listening to audio and watching a video as input, discussing listening exercises, and giving listening tasks (individually / in pairs / groups) which emphasize note-taking skills.

This course is designed to develop students’ competence in reading and understanding texts of various fields with literal and interpretive comprehension. The students are required to understand meaning of words and use them in contexts correctly, identify and find a topic, main ideas, and supporting sentences. They are also required to understand general and specific information of a text by applying appropriate reading strategies, i.e. previewing, skimming, and scanning, and recognize patterns of text organization, such as, definition, simple listing, sequence, cause and effect, comparison and contrast. The teaching-learning activities are conducted through lecturer’s presentation, individual and pair work, class discussion, question and answer, and assignment.

20201 - Methods of Teaching

This course deals with major theories of or approaches to language teaching as well as their applications, both as proposed and practised, with reference to EFL teaching/learning in the Indonesian context. It is therefore both theoretical and practical. The topics to be covered include: EFL teacher competencies, major approaches to and methods of language teaching, developments of EFL teaching in Indonesia, communicative language ability, language teaching methods/techniques, language syllabus models, roles of fluency and accuracy, English varieties, teaching four language skills, teaching grammatical competence, learning styles and strategies, and second/foreign language assessment.
